How the laser finds the follicle
The target is melanin in the hair shaft. Laser light at the right wavelength passes through the surface of the skin, is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, and converts to heat. That heat travels a short distance down the shaft and damages the structures at the base of the follicle responsible for producing the next hair.
Everything that makes laser hair removal work well or badly follows from that. Dark hair absorbs more; pale hair absorbs almost nothing. Pale skin competes less for the energy; darker skin competes more, which is why wavelength choice and settings matter so much. And the follicle can only be damaged when it is actively attached to the growing hair, which is why a course is not an upsell but a physiological requirement.
What we treat
Face, including upper lip, chin and jawline, which is what most women come in for. Underarms, bikini and Brazilian, legs, arms, back, chest and shoulders. Neck and beard shaping for men, including for those with recurrent ingrown hairs, which is one of the more genuinely medical uses of the treatment.
Honest limits
We will tell you before you buy a package if we do not think your hair will respond. Blonde, red, grey and white hair does not have enough pigment for this technology to work on, and no number of sessions changes that. Electrolysis treats those hairs, we do not offer electrolysis, and saying so costs us a sale and saves you money.
We will also raise it if the pattern of growth suggests an underlying cause. Sudden coarse hair growth in a new distribution is worth investigating with your family doctor rather than only lasering.
Who this suits, and who it does not
It suits you if your hair is dark enough to absorb energy, if you can stay out of the sun during the course, if you can shave rather than wax between sessions, and if you can attend appointments roughly when they are scheduled.
It does not suit you if you are pregnant, if you are tanned, if you cannot stop waxing or plucking, or if you have taken isotretinoin recently. Some medications increase photosensitivity, so bring your list.
At the appointment
Your skin type and hair type are assessed and documented, and a patch test is performed before your first full treatment. Protective eyewear is worn by everyone in the room for the entire treatment.
The area is shaved if needed, cooling is applied, and the handpiece is passed methodically over the area. You will smell singed hair. That is normal.
Afterwards
Expect redness and small raised bumps around each follicle, looking a little like goosebumps, settling over hours to a day. The treated hairs do not fall out immediately; they shed over the following couple of weeks, which can look like regrowth if nobody has warned you.
Avoid heat, saunas, hot tubs and heavy exercise for a period, keep the area clean, and use sun protection. Between sessions you may shave, but you must not wax, pluck or thread, because removing the hair from the follicle removes the target the next session needs.
If it is wrong for you, we say so before you book again. A nurse-practitioner-led clinic has a licence at stake. That is the whole reason we are careful - and the reason the honest answer sometimes is "not this, and not yet".

Being straight with you
When we would
tell you no.
Every clinic lists who a treatment suits. This is the other half. If any of these is you, say so at the consultation and we will talk about what else might work, or about waiting.
- Your hair is blonde, red, grey or white. There is no pigment for the laser to find.
- You are tanned or wearing self-tanner. Extra melanin in the skin is how burns happen.
- You cannot stop waxing, plucking or threading between sessions. The laser needs the follicle intact.
- You are pregnant. We will start the course after you have finished.
- You want it finished before summer. A course is spaced by the hair growth cycle.
- Your hair growth changed suddenly in a new pattern. Get the cause investigated first.

We look at what is actually bothering you, ask what you have tried, and tell you honestly whether this is the right treatment. Costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Plan
Your clinician maps the plan with you and agrees it before you commit to anything. The plan is signed off by our Medical Director before treatment begins.

Treatment
Your clinician carries out the plan exactly as it was agreed. You are told what is happening, where and why, before it starts - and the quoted price does not change on the chair.

Review
We see you again to check the result and adjust the plan for next time. The first appointment is the start of the plan, not the whole of it.

Questions people actually ask
Straight answers.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
The accurate term is permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal, and that distinction is a regulatory one as well as an honest one. A properly completed course substantially reduces the amount, thickness and colour of hair in the treated area, and most people move onto occasional maintenance rather than never thinking about it again. Anyone promising you permanent removal is overselling.
Why does it need multiple sessions?
Because laser only works on hair that is in its active growing phase, and at any moment only a proportion of the follicles in an area are in that phase. Sessions are spaced so that successive treatments catch different groups of follicles as they cycle. This is also why turning up late for your next session sets the course back rather than simply delaying it.
Does it work on blonde, red, grey or white hair?
Poorly, and we will tell you that before you pay for a package. The laser targets melanin in the hair shaft, so hair with little or no pigment gives it almost nothing to absorb. Dark hair on lighter skin remains the easiest case. If your hair is grey, white or very fair, electrolysis is the treatment that works, and we do not offer it, so we will point you elsewhere.
Can it be done on darker skin tones?
Yes, with the right wavelength and settings, but it demands proper assessment rather than a default protocol. The risk in darker skin is that surrounding melanin absorbs energy meant for the hair, causing burns or pigment change. We assess your Fitzpatrick type, patch test, and set conservative parameters. If we do not think we can treat you safely, we will say so.
Do I have to shave first?
Yes, shave the area the day before or the morning of your appointment, and do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate for a period beforehand. The laser needs the follicle intact below the surface and no hair above it. Turning up unshaved with a full growth means we either shave you at cost or reschedule.
Can I have it if I am tanned?
No. We do not treat tanned or recently sun-exposed skin, and self-tanner has to be completely gone. A tan means extra melanin in the epidermis competing for the laser energy, which is how burns happen. Ontario summers make this the most common reason we move an appointment.
Does it hurt?
Most people describe a hot snap with each pulse, and the areas over bone, such as the shin, upper lip and bikini line, are the ones people find sharpest. Cooling is used throughout. It is short, and the majority of people tolerate it without anaesthetic.
Who should not have laser hair removal?
We do not treat over active infection, open lesions or recent tanning, or during pregnancy. Certain medications increase light sensitivity, recent isotretinoin use requires an interval, and a history of keloid scarring needs discussion. If your hair growth pattern has changed suddenly or you have signs of a hormonal cause, we will suggest you have that investigated rather than simply treating the symptom.
