The simplest idea in skin treatment
Your skin already knows how to rebuild itself. Microneedling exploits that directly: injure the skin in a way that is controlled, sterile and small enough to heal cleanly, and the repair process lays down new collagen and elastin. Do that at a sensible interval, several times, and the accumulated repair changes how the skin looks and behaves.
There is no light, no radiofrequency and no chemistry involved. That simplicity is a real advantage. Because the mechanism does not depend on targeting melanin, microneedling is generally safer across a wider range of skin tones than light-based devices, though it is not risk free in anyone.
Depth is the whole skill
A microneedling device can be set to almost any depth within its range, and the setting is not the same across a face. The skin on the forehead is not the same thickness as the skin over the cheekbone, which is not the same as the skin around the mouth or over the jaw. Treating a whole face at one depth is the mark of someone following a protocol rather than assessing a person.
Depth is also what separates a treatment aimed at surface texture and pores from a treatment aimed at remodelling an acne scar. The second needs to reach the scar, which is deeper, which means more discomfort and more recovery.
Who this suits, and who it does not
It suits you if your concern is texture, pores, fine lines, dullness or shallow acne scarring, if laser is not appropriate for your skin tone, if you want a treatment with no thermal risk, and if you can commit to a course.
It does not suit you if you have significant laxity, because needling alone will not lift, and Morpheus8 or another modality would serve you better. It will not clear vascular redness. It is a poor first choice for melasma. And if you have active, inflamed acne, needling through it risks spreading infection, so we treat the acne first.
Combining it
Microneedling pairs naturally with platelet-rich plasma, where your own plasma is applied into the channels during treatment. It also sits well in a plan alongside peels, which work on the surface while needling works below it, though they are not done at the same visit.
We will not do microneedling on the same day as an injectable treatment in the same area.
At the appointment
Your skin is cleansed, photographed and consented. Topical anaesthetic is applied and allowed to work properly, which matters more here than most people expect. A sterile single-use cartridge is loaded and the device is passed across the skin in overlapping directions, with the depth adjusted zone by zone.
Pinpoint bleeding at deeper settings is normal and expected. A calming serum is applied at the end.
Afterwards
Redness, heat and tightness are normal on the day. Leave the skin bare, avoid makeup for the period you are advised, and skip the gym, saunas and hot showers for a while. Do not restart retinoids or acids until you are told.
Sun protection is essential. The visible improvement builds over the weeks after each session as collagen remodels, so this is a treatment assessed at review appointments and against your consultation photographs.
If it is wrong for you, we say so before you book again. A nurse-practitioner-led clinic has a licence at stake. That is the whole reason we are careful - and the reason the honest answer sometimes is "not this, and not yet".

Being straight with you
When we would
tell you no.
Every clinic lists who a treatment suits. This is the other half. If any of these is you, say so at the consultation and we will talk about what else might work, or about waiting.
- You have active, inflamed acne in the area. Needling through it risks spreading infection.
- Your concern is significant laxity. Needling alone will not lift anything.
- You have a cold sore, eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area.
- You are pregnant. We will start the course once you have finished.
- Your main concern is melasma. This is a poor first choice for it.
- You are taking isotretinoin, or stopped recently. Tell us, because it changes the timing.

Nothing here happens on the same visit you first walk in, unless you want it to and it is right for you. This is the order we work in.

Consult
We look at what is actually bothering you, ask what you have tried, and tell you honestly whether this is the right treatment. Costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Plan
Your clinician maps the plan with you and agrees it before you commit to anything. The plan is signed off by our Medical Director before treatment begins.

Treatment
Your clinician carries out the plan exactly as it was agreed. You are told what is happening, where and why, before it starts - and the quoted price does not change on the chair.
- 04
Review
We see you again to check the result and adjust the plan for next time. The first appointment is the start of the plan, not the whole of it.

How does microneedling work?
A sterile cartridge of fine needles oscillates rapidly to create thousands of tiny channels through the epidermis into the dermis. Each channel is a controlled micro-injury, and the skin responds by producing collagen and elastin to repair it. The improvement comes from your own healing response, not from anything applied to you.
What does it treat well?
Texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, general dullness, and acne scarring, particularly rolling and shallow boxcar scars. It also helps stretch marks to a degree. Because there is no light or heat involved, it is a reasonable option for skin tones where laser carries a higher pigment risk.
Is it the same as the pen you can buy online?
No, and the difference matters. Clinical microneedling uses a medical device with sterile single-use cartridges, at depths chosen for each area of your face by someone trained to judge them, in a clinic where infection control is a standard rather than an intention. Home rollers do not reach a useful depth and are a genuine infection risk.
How is it different from Morpheus8?
Microneedling is mechanical only, and works mainly in the upper and mid dermis. Morpheus8 adds radiofrequency heat at a controlled depth, which lets it work deeper and affect laxity as well as texture. Morpheus8 costs more and has more recovery. If your concern is surface texture and pores, plain microneedling is often the sensible and cheaper answer, and we will say so.
Should I add PRP to it?
It depends on your goals and budget rather than being automatically better. Adding platelet-rich plasma layers your own concentrated growth factors into the freshly created channels. Some people notice a difference in comfort and recovery, others do not think it justified the extra cost. We will give you our honest read on whether it is worth it for your skin.
How many sessions will I need?
It is planned as a course, because collagen builds cumulatively and one session will not resolve texture or scarring. The number depends on your skin and the concern. We map out the course and its total cost at consultation rather than adding sessions afterwards.
What does the recovery look like?
Expect redness and warmth like moderate sunburn on the day, settling over the following day or two, sometimes with tightness and light flaking as it recovers. Deeper treatments for scarring produce more reaction than lighter ones. It is far less than a resurfacing laser and far more than a facial.
Who should not have microneedling?
We do not treat over active infection, inflamed or cystic acne, cold sores, eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area, and we do not treat in pregnancy. Recent isotretinoin use requires an interval, a history of keloid scarring needs discussion, and if you have a bleeding disorder or take anticoagulants, raise it at consultation.
