What injection lipolysis is for
Some fat pockets do not behave like the rest of your body fat. The classic example is under the chin: people who are lean everywhere else, who have lost weight successfully, and who still have a submental fullness that shows in every photograph taken from below. That pocket often runs in families and is largely indifferent to diet and exercise.
Fat dissolving injections address that specific situation. A compound is injected into the pocket in a controlled grid. It disrupts the cell membranes of the fat cells it contacts, the contents are released, and the body clears them through normal metabolic and lymphatic routes over the following weeks.
Why we assess before we agree
Under-chin fullness has at least four different causes and only one of them responds to this treatment. It can be fat, which we can treat. It can be loose skin, which needs tightening rather than dissolving. It can be a strong platysma band pulling the neck down. It can be skeletal, a recessed chin or a high hyoid bone, which no injection will change.
We check which of those you have before we quote you. Occasionally the honest answer is that a chin filler would improve your profile more than dissolving anything, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the treatment you walked in asking for.
Who this suits, and who it does not
It suits you if you have a discrete, pinchable pocket of fat, stable body weight, reasonable skin quality, and patience for a course of treatments with a slow reveal.
It does not suit you if you are looking for overall fat reduction, if your weight is still changing significantly, if the fullness is skin rather than fat, or if you need a result by a specific date. We do not treat in pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active infection, or where there is an unexplained lump or swelling in the area that has not been assessed medically.
At the appointment
The area is marked with you sitting upright and photographed. Local anaesthetic is used. The product is injected in a defined grid pattern across the marked pocket, at a controlled depth, keeping away from the structures at the border of the area.
Afterwards
This is the treatment on our menu with the most visible immediate reaction. The area swells, sometimes considerably, and can feel firm, tender, warm or numb. It is uncomfortable rather than painful for most people, and it settles progressively. Do not schedule this before an event, a photograph or a presentation.
You will be given aftercare covering swelling management, what is normal, and the specific signs that should prompt you to call us. Firmness and lumpiness in the area during the settling phase are expected. We review you before deciding whether a further session is warranted.
If it is wrong for you, we say so before you book again. A nurse-practitioner-led clinic has a licence at stake. That is the whole reason we are careful - and the reason the honest answer sometimes is "not this, and not yet".

Being straight with you
When we would
tell you no.
Every clinic lists who a treatment suits. This is the other half. If any of these is you, say so at the consultation and we will talk about what else might work, or about waiting.
- You want overall fat reduction. This treats one small pocket and is a poor tool otherwise.
- Your weight is still changing significantly. Settle that first and we will reassess the pocket.
- What you are pinching is loose skin rather than fat. Tightening is the honest answer.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding. We will keep the plan for afterwards.
- You need a result by a set date. Swelling is substantial and the reveal is slow.
- There is an unexplained lump or swelling in the area. That needs assessing medically first.

Nothing here happens on the same visit you first walk in, unless you want it to and it is right for you. This is the order we work in.

Consult
We look at what is actually bothering you, ask what you have tried, and tell you honestly whether this is the right treatment. Costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Plan
Your clinician maps the plan with you and agrees it before you commit to anything. The plan is signed off by our Medical Director before treatment begins.

Treatment
Your clinician carries out the plan exactly as it was agreed. You are told what is happening, where and why, before it starts - and the quoted price does not change on the chair.

Review
We see you again to check the result and adjust the plan for next time. The first appointment is the start of the plan, not the whole of it.

What are fat dissolving injections?
They are injections of a compound that disrupts the membrane of fat cells in a defined pocket, so the contents are released and cleared by the body over the following weeks. The technique is called injection lipolysis. It is a contouring treatment for a small, specific area, not a way of losing weight.
Is this a weight loss treatment?
No. Injection lipolysis is for a localised pocket that is out of proportion to the rest of you, and it is a poor and expensive tool for general fat reduction. If your goal is overall weight, our medical weight loss program with our Nurse Practitioner is the appropriate route, and we will redirect you to it rather than take a booking that will not serve you.
Where can it be used?
The submental area under the chin is the most commonly treated site, because it is a well-defined pocket that many people carry regardless of their weight. Other small body areas are sometimes treated. We assess whether what you are pinching is actually fat, because loose skin and a low-set hyoid bone both create the same silhouette and neither responds to this treatment.
Will my skin be loose afterwards if the fat goes?
That is the right question to ask, and the answer depends on your skin quality and your age. If we think your skin will not retract well, we will tell you before treating, and we may recommend addressing skin tightening with radiofrequency microneedling first or instead. This is one of the more common reasons we advise people against the treatment.
Does it hurt?
The injections themselves are quick, but the reaction afterwards is the part people remember. Expect significant swelling, firmness, tenderness and sometimes a burning sensation in the hours after treatment. This is an expected inflammatory response, not a complication, and we tell people in advance because it surprises those who were not warned.
How many sessions will I need?
More than one, in almost every case, and the number depends on the size of the pocket and your response. We plan it as a course and quote the course, so you are not committing to an open-ended series. If you do not respond after the planned sessions, we stop rather than continue.
How long before I see a difference?
Not quickly. The fat cells are disrupted at treatment, but the contents have to be cleared by the body and the swelling has to settle before anything is visible, so this is a treatment assessed over weeks rather than days. Photographs at consultation matter here, because gradual change is genuinely hard to see in a mirror.
Who should not have it?
We do not treat during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over infection or inflammation in the area, or where there is a hernia or an underlying swelling we cannot account for. We are also careful in people with significant skin laxity, thyroid or lymph node abnormalities in the neck, and bleeding disorders. Everything relevant is covered at consultation.
