What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea affects an estimated 14 million Americans — most people don’t even know they have it. Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that makes your face turn red and may cause swelling and skin sores that look like acne. Although there is no cure, there are a number of treatments used by the Bradford Skin Clinic and Medical Spa to minimize the unsightly bumps that can appear on your nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead.

Many times rosacea is confused with “adult acne” because it can come and go. It is most common in people over 30 and women, but men who suffer from rosacea seem to have stronger symptoms. There are also numerous foods, temperatures, activities, and emotional states that can trigger your rosacea to flare up.

What Triggers Rosacea?

Remember that different people will have different triggers. Although the cause of rosacea is undetermined, generally things that make you blush make your condition worse. According to WebMD, the following are known or suspected triggers of rosacea:

  • Food
    • Spicy Foods
    • Alcohol
  • Activities
    • Baths or saunas
    • Exercise or heavy exertion
  • Emotions
    • Stress
    • Anxiety
    • Sudden change in emotion causing embarrassment
  • Medical conditions
    • Menopause
    • Caffeine withdrawal
  • Medications
    • Topical steroids
    • Blood pressure drugs
    • Some opiate painkillers

What Are The Symptoms?

  • Redness of the face
  • Blushing or flushing easily
  • A lot of spider-like blood vessels (telangiectasia) of the face
  • Red nose
  • Facial swelling
  • Acne-like skin sores that may ooze or crust
  • Burning or stinging feeling in the face
  • Irritated, bloodshot, watery eyes called ocular rosacea
  • Skin thickening

How Can Rosacea Be Treated?

At the Bradford Skin Clinic & Medical Spa, many of our clients come to us because overcoming rosacea is one of our skin specialties. We often combat this condition with a two-pronged approach: laser photo rejuvenation and skin care products known to treat rosacea.

Our trained aestheticians use the UltraPulse Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) to treat the small veins and red spots that often accompany rosacea. VPL uses light energy that absorbs the blood vessels and removes them naturally. A side benefit is the VPL also stimulates the body to produce more collagen, which results in a smoother texture, smaller pore size and reduced fine lines and wrinkles. You can bring your rosacea under control and look younger in the process!

The small pulses of light feel like small rubber bands snapping – the laser procedure is virtually painless, non-invasive, and non-surgical. Although you will see a difference after your first laser treatment, a series from 3 – 5 may be needed to totally bring the condition under control.

Additionally, we carry a line of Priori skin care products that our clients who have rosacea rave about. They contain a soothing moisturizer that deeply hydrates and re-texturizes your skin and stimulates the production of collagen.

At The Bradford Skin Clinic & Medical Spa, you will meet with an aesthetician who will devise a treatment program designed specifically for rosacea.
